  HISTORY

A Bit of History
Here is a fine example of what can be accomplished when one man has a dream and a few friends help out to make the dream come true.

In the spring of 1992 Gord “Horley” Cameron conceived the idea of giving the music of Bill Monroe a “home-away-from-home” in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec. He solicited the help of Tom Kilbride, Ernie Schumacher and Gary White. As a result of Gord’s legendary powers of persuasion the little group soon had a basic sound system and, thanks to Norm Banks of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #77 in Waterloo, Quebec, a place to install it. People came to listen. They bought memberships. The dream started to come to life.

Making it Official
A talented commercial artist named Frank Johnson Main took on the task of designing a logo and came up with the banjo-in-the-mountains image that we are so familiar with today.

In November, 1993, the official letters patent of Townships Bluegrass and Old-Tyme Music Society were issued under the seal of l’inspecteur general des institutions financiers of Quebec.

And The Idea Grew
Over the years the club has continued to grow and flourish to where it now boasts over 140 single and family memberships covering approximately 240 people, musicians and non-musicians alike. The monthly jam sessions at the Legion Hall draw an average in excess of 110 devotees from near and far.

Community Involvement
Many bluegrass and/or old time country music groups have formed here or migrated here to have their music enjoyed by an appreciative audience. Hooked On Bluegrass, Bordertown Bluegrass, Last Chance, Folkgrass, Road Scholars, Rural Roots, Wind River, Ruiter Brook, Highway 55 and many others have, under the Townships Bluegrass banner, taken their place as good community citizens performing benefit concerts large and small at such venues as Musicfest in Ayer’s Cliff on behalf of the Children’s Wish Foundation, various church groups and retirement homes and, most recently, at the very successful fundraiser for the First Responders of the Town of Brome Lake.

And The Future Holds
The current directors are proud to be the custodians of this history and wish to assure all those interested that the future bodes well for the continued growth and community involvement of Horley’s Dream.
