PHUOPSIS STYLOSA
Phuopsis stylosa (Crosswort; syn. Crucianella stylosa) is a Eurasian member of the Madder family (Rubiaceae) native to the Caucasus and northern Iran. Although it has been cultivated in Western gardens since the middle of the 19th century, Crosswort remains a decidedly uncommon plant.
From June to late August, Phuopsis stylosa bears round heads of tiny star-shaped, rose-pink flowers on a thick mat of tangled, creeping stems. I have found that short "haircut" at the end of this first flowering period will often entice the plant to bloom a second time in late September or early October.
Phuopsis stylosa is tough, long-lived plant that thrives in just about any well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Despite some claims that the species is hardy only to USDA Zone 5-6, my plants have easily survived my Zone 4 climate both with and without snow cover. I suspect excessive dampness, rather than cold temperatures will prove to be this species greatest winter enemy.
While there is no doubt that Phuopsis stylosa is vigorous plant, and should be given plenty of room, suggestions that it is invasive have, in my experience, been somewhat unjustified. At any rate, cultivation in poorer soils seems to inhibit any tendency towards aggressive behaviour. Another complaint about species is that it has an unpleasant odour. While I agree that the plant does possess a slightly pungent odour, it is in truth far from offensive and, for the most part, largely indiscernible to all but the most sensitive of noses.
Because of its relatively diminutive stature (c. 20- 30 cm high), Phuopsis stylosa is best planted at the front of the border or in the rockery. I have found its creeping habit most effective at the edge of stone or brick walkway or when it is allowed to spill over a low wall.
Although Phuopsis stylosa is not readily available in the nursery trade, the species is easily grown from seed. Surface sown seeds will readily germinate after it has been stratified for a period of 2 or 3 weeks. Seeds can be ordered online at: www.chilternseeds.co.uk
