ANNEX 1 - DONALD PATRIQUIN

Mr. Patriquin is the originator of this exciting musical and cultural project. Born in Sherbrooke, he has devoted his entire life to music and is ideally equipped to make Noël 2000 a huge success.

Education
Donald Patriquin was eleven when he began to compose, and though his musical career was 'interrupted' for a while by studies in biology, he was always involved in musical endeavors. Mr. Patriquin is a graduate of the Faculties of Music of McGill, and the University of Toronto, where he studied composition with Istvàn Anhalt and John Weinzweig respectively.

Career
For some thirty years, he was on the staff of McGill's Faculty of Music, teaching theory, musicianship and arranging, and directing a variety of ensembles. He has recently returned to his native Eastern Townships of Quebec where he is finding more time to perform, conduct, compose and publish. His musical output includes many short and extended choral and instrumental works, liturgical settings, a piano concerto, music for theater and ballet and mixed media productions. Mr. Patriquin is known internationally particularly for his fine choral and instrumental arrangements of folk music.

Works
His World Music Suite One was premiered this past October in Toronto and his recently written Caribbean Mass based on the traditions and instruments of the region were performed under his direction in Grenada this past Easter. His Children of the Rainbow took 2nd price in the international competition New Music for Dance held in the Laurentians this past summer.

Folk music has been of continuing interest to him, and much of his musical work is based on it. His Antiphon and the Child of Mary (on the CD Noël Nowell Noël, recently awarded first prize in the New York's Melodious Accord Biennial Composition Search for New Choral Music, is based on a little known Newfound-land carol and his Hangman's Reel, a ballet score commissioned by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, is based on the Québécois, American and Irish fiddle music as performed by the extraordinary Québec fiddler Jean Carignan.

The trilogy, Trois Chansons Québécoises recently published have been performed and recorded by a large number of American choirs, and have found their way onto several CDs. His large-scale compositions such as Earthpeace One and Two, Celebration For The Planet Earth and Requiem at Sea have earned him a reputation as a composer whose music addresses many concerns.

Mr. Patriquin's music is available on a number of CDs and is often hear on radio. His choral music is published primarily by A Tempo in Canada and earthsongs in the USA.
