There's a dream floating around that reflects the "Main" (blvd. St. Laurent) influence of some of the finest street wise musicians in Montreal. From time to time it materializes, playing out a fusion of musical ideas as dreamers take to the stage or studio, and other times it's happy just hanging around the metaphysical world. Either way, it's always going to be "A dream I had".

It became a dream I had, when I was approached by the band in 1995 to record an album for the then current dreamers; Alain Vary (Drummer), Benoit Vary (Bass), Paddy Walsh (Lead Singer), Frank Rackow (Sax), Patrick Ramos (Guitar), Pierre Veilleux (Bass), Frederic Demers (Trumpet), Eric McSween (Sax), Guy Bernard (Trombone) & Allison Notkin (Guitar).

"A Dream I Had" is urban in character and lifestyle, and I'm the complete opposite; living in a small town with part of my studio tucked away in a converted hayloft. Sharing the band's dreamscape with someone like me can be quite worrisome for cutting edge, pop culture musicians. Anyway, the fusion took place, and the tracks sound like they were recorded in my piano shop; very live and natural. No underground compressed drums (the kind Paddy wanted).

I'll always remember Paddy Walsh (currently performing with the Kingpins) as being extremely sensitive to the change he had to go through when coming to record at my studio. It could have had something to do with the long bus rides he had to endure, and the fact that the studio was doubling as a piano shop (I don't think his voice reverberating in the piano strings particularly impressed him).

Over the course of that summer I recorded 10 songs of "A Dream I Had" (even played a little guitar & keyboard on the sessions - a la Hitchcock), only to have them sit on the shelf. Finally, "A dream I had" is materializing once again (by way of this web site), and I'm happy to be part of this ultimate creative expression. I enjoyed the arguments, the Kids (brass section), Frank the wise man, Alain the organizer and rhythm king, Allison the quiet one with much to say musically, Patrick the whiz kid, Pierre & Benoit the super bassists, stepping in Paddy's dog's shit and drinking Paddy's homemade beer.
